Spark Digital Media has produced a short motion picture entitled Cleveland In My Dreams, based on the eponymous short story by Lawrence Block. In brief, the story is about a man who suffers from a recurring dream. With the help of a psychiatrist, he solves his problem and the story ends with a humorous twist.

The movie is not rated by the MPAA but has been edited for an approximately PG audience. The story is a comedy with some surreal elements.

Spark Digital Media founder Mark Sullivan produced, directed, edited, and scored the half-hour film. Olive Sullivan adapted the story for the screen. Annie Clarkson cast the project and was the associate producer.

Premiere Sells Out

The World Premiere of Cleveland was screened August 2, 2005 at the Route 66 Movie Theatre in downtown Webb City, Missouri. The principal players and screenwriter Olive Sullivan arrived by limousine and entered the theatre over a red carpet. The event completely sold out and there were even people sitting on the floor in the aisle.

The movie itself was very well received. Members of the audience generally said the film exceeded their expectations. Even cast and crew, who had not previously seen the finished product, expressed surprise at how well the project turned out.

One Pittsburg attendee wrote: "I genuinely thought it was terrific. From the quality of the sound & picture, the acting and storyline, and the atmosphere in the theater, the whole thing was great." Another man said, "At the beginning, I could tell that I was watching a low-budget movie. After the first few minutes, it just didn't matter."

Gross box office for the single-screen event was $2,650. Although this is pocket change in Hollywood, it compares favorably to the movie's $3,750 production budget.

The filmmakers will now shift their focus to finishing the retail DVD and trying to place it in stores. They expect to release the DVD in the first week of September.

A Four-States Production

This short film was produced in and around Joplin, MO by an amateur but dedicated cast and crew. Joplin landmarks such as Newton's Jewelry, Twin Hills Country Club, and Interstate 44 stand in for Ohio locations.

The film runs about half an hour in length and, although not rated by the MPAA, has been edited to an approximate PG rating for mild profanity and a sexually suggestive situation.
